The Alphabet as a Child’s First Design Object
The story behind A Whimsical Alphabet for Curious Little Minds
Some creative projects begin with a business plan. Mine began with a baby shower invitation and a simple wish to make something special - something that would bring joy, smiles, and a little wonder to its new owner.
My Whimsical Animal Alphabet was never intended as a commercial project. It was a personal gift, born from imagination and my belief that even the simplest objects for children can be beautifully designed.
Where the Characters Came From
The mid-century aesthetic was an intuitive choice. I imagined charming, slightly nostalgic illustrations with softly faded colors, fashionable outfits, and plenty of personality.
My very first inspiration came from an unexpected place - a documentary about the underwater world. A colorful mantis shrimp appeared on the screen, with extraordinary eyes moving in every direction. Its fascinating appearance made me smile, and I immediately imagined this unusual creature dressed in an elegant, silky gown.
And just like that, the letter S came to life!

Next came the chameleon, inspired by photographs I had taken years earlier at the Cleveland Botanical Garden. I dressed him in a polka-dot sweater and vintage sneakers, with a charming little ladybug as his companion - his friend, not his lunch!
Soon, other characters began appearing in my imagination: a fancy octopus wearing an old-fashioned blue hat and costume jewelry on every tentacle; a dazzling zebra juggling jellyfish while riding a unicycle; a cool koala in colorful beach attire, ready to catch a wave... Each animal received its own whimsical personality, fashionable wardrobe, and exciting little adventure.
When Learning Becomes Play

As the collection developed, I wanted the illustrations to offer more than letter recognition.
I began writing playful alliterative sentences for each character, using rhythm and repetition to introduce children to sounds and words while adding another layer of humor and storytelling. “
Dazzling Zebra zooms on one wheel - juggling jellyfish with zero effort!”
Now, every letter had a voice, and every illustration invited another smile.

What began as a handmade gift eventually became A Whimsical Alphabet for Curious Little Minds: a collection of 28 double-sided illustrated animal alphabet cards, created for playful learning, storytelling, and discovery.
But the personal touch of that original handmade gift remains. The experience begins even before the first card is revealed: every set is hand-wrapped in vintage gift paper, bringing a tactile touch of mid-century nostalgia to the digitally created illustrations and making the simple act of unwrapping part of the joy of discovery.
From Alphabet Cards to Art for Little Walls
The collection began with such a simple intention: to create a special gift that would bring happiness. But along the way, each whimsical character became a little artwork in its own right, ready to live beyond the alphabet cards.
That inspired me to introduce a selection of the original illustrations as individual art prints. The adventurous characters now bring their playful charm to children's rooms, nurseries, and other spaces where art can inspire curiosity and bring a smile.
I believe a child's first experience with art and design can begin with something as simple as a beautifully illustrated alphabet card - a creative gift that sparks curiosity, inspires storytelling, and, perhaps, becomes a treasured little part of childhood.
